ER Visit: January 10, 2020

Updated: Jan 30, 2020

On Friday, January 10th, I noticed that Jack felt a little “warm” to the touch. He was also experiencing some labored breathing and wheezing from his post-surgery respiratory distress and intubation. It was about 9pm, so I decided to take his temperature.

100.7

This isn’t “too” much of a concern for a typical child, but for a child with cancer, we were told by his oncology team that a fever over 100 degrees can be potentially life-threatening. I checked again shortly afterwards. 100.8. Time to call the doctor.

We were sent to the ER where his fever was confirmed and testing was completed to assess for respiratory viruses. Jack tested positive for RSV and metapneumovirus, so we were readmitted back into the hospital. We spent two additional days in the pediatric unit until his fever broke and to allow him to be carefully monitored by nurses and an amazing respiratory therapy team. Chemotherapy treatments were supposed to begin the following day, but treatment was postponed until later in the week. We are still awaiting details regarding specifics of his chemotherapy treatments. Updates to come.
